Garry Barker - paper engineering

Although my focus will be the delivery of typography and layout, I decided to look at paper engineering in an attempt to bring together the large number of elements Garry wants to be part of this publication. I've already laid down some rules that each element has to be separate because they need to be interchangeable. So therefore, I must folding as a mechanism to house the content and navigate around the various elements.

It's difficult to know what is potentially going to be in the pack of 'stuff' as the brief is fairly open to expand. I started to experiment with the paper folding to see what the possibilities were, and to see if I could open up a point of research.

I started out by doing simple folds to make a book that would eventually open up into a print or map of some description.

Simple leaflet foldout.

Index style inserts

This was flawed pretty quickly due to the way they fit together.

Book that reads both ways

Consertina with image.

Pack, with inserts. This seems to be the winner in terms of how it will incorporate everything. It could operate as a mailer too.
